Onitsha Country Club to Launch Tennis Academy for Youths and Out-of-School Children
The President of Onitsha Country Club, Fegge, in Onitsha South Council Area, Mr. Anietonwa Kingsley Ajulufo, has announced plans to establish a tennis academy aimed at engaging youths and out-of-school children in the community.
Mr. Ajulufo disclosed this during a tour of the club’s facilities by the leadership of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Anambra State Chapter.
“In Fegge, there are many out-of-school children and youths. We want to engage those interested in tennis and teach them the game because tennis is our primary focus at this club,” he said. “We are currently collecting names, and by January 2025, we plan to hire a coach and commence the academy.”
He further revealed that the club’s four lawn tennis courts, expected to be ready by December, will help attract national competitions to Onitsha. To this end, Mr. Ajulufo plans to engage with the national lawn tennis governing body to promote collaboration.
Achievements and Development Efforts
Reflecting on his tenure as president, which began in March 2023, Mr. Ajulufo highlighted several infrastructural developments under his leadership. Among these is the renovation of the squash court— the oldest building in the club—now upgraded to a state-of-the-art facility.
Other renovations include:
- Lawn Tennis Courts: All four courts have undergone significant refurbishment.
- Indoor Sports Hall: Housing a gym, snooker tables, and table tennis facilities, the hall was renovated and inaugurated just two days before the passing of late Senator Patrick Ifeanyi Uba.
- Transportation and Energy: Within his first 100 days in office, Mr. Ajulufo procured a 28-seater Coaster A/C bus for the club, marking a first in two decades. Additionally, solar energy facilities were installed to reduce electricity costs.
The President emphasized his vision for the club, stating: “When I assumed office, many people were unaware of the club’s existence. My goal has been to showcase our activities and transform the club into a hub of excellence. Despite the challenges, I’m committed to completing all ongoing projects within the next four months.”
Future Plans
Mr. Ajulufo revealed that the club has already invested between ₦80 million and ₦100 million in renovations and is prepared to invest another ₦100 million in future projects. These include building a 400-capacity sports pavilion and a miniature football stadium for the younger members.
The club has also collaborated with the Anambra State Government, providing its facilities for events such as the Traders Sports Competition.
As Mr. Ajulufo continues to lead with determination and focus, Onitsha Country Club is set to become a beacon of sports development and community engagement in the region.
